Me thinks a few of the members have sewn the seeds for this thread.
What was it like when "You was a boy" ?
From Flemwad (classic) - They don't know how good they have it, when i were a lad we used to tramp 5 miles to school , head wind and rain all the way and deliver newspapers on the way so we could afford to put cardboard in our shoes with the holes in the soles, no car in our family ,only the Queen had a car, we had a hand me down penny farthing which was halfpence by the time i got it, No books to write in just bits of chalk and a slate , Discipline well after a few whacks with the cricket bat and cat o nine tails you learnt ow to speak proper like wot i does now....smoking was not an issue i could buy em for a penny each but that was short lived as me granny kept nicking em so never got the hang of it. You could steal apples knowing the worst you got was a kick up the rear from the local copper .gone are the good old days where high speed chase meant running like hell from the school bully and you could leave your front door open as there was less to nick in your house than the burglars.
From Peanut 2000 - You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of o' gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
